Getting to the top of Google rankings is the Holy Grail for many companies, with 61.8% of visitor clicks going to the top three ranked companies. Just moving from position four to three can increase traffic by 400%!
There is no magic bullet for getting to the top of Google, but there are some quick fixes to give you a better chance of reaching the promised land.
- Targeting the right keywords. What are your customers actually searching for, not what you call the product, what do your customers call it? Quick example. Years ago, we were promoting Rollerblades. At the time, there were lots of searches but little competition. Why? Well, in the trade, they are called Inline Skates, so that’s what most companies called them on their website.
- On-page optimisation. Get your meta tags and descriptions, based on your keywords, into the right pages. I.e. Your Home page should be your generic phrases. The “X675 widget” page should have “X675 widget” in the meta-areas.
- Use Search Console. A real pro-tip here, but Google will tell you how they see your website and areas they would like to see improved. Ignore this at your peril!
- Mobile-friendly. Google wants all Users to have a great experience when they visit your website; due to current online usage moving towards favouring mobiles and tablets Google is heavily influenced by how your website appears on mobiles.
- Mobile Speed. Linked to the appearance and functionality, Google likes fast websites on mobile. They do care about desktop speed but they prioritise mobile speeds so ensure it’s quick on mobile. If it isn’t, then you have a problem.
- Tracking Results. If you aren’t tracking results, then how do you know what is working and where you should focus? Use Google Analytics to track eCommerce sales, Email signups, Forms, and Telephone Calls. Everything that can be tracked should be tracked.
